How do I quickly adjust my Excel column width with AutoFit?
Sometimes you have columns that are too narrow to display what’s in them (or are so wide they leave extra space in every cell). You may have a similar problem with your row heights.
While you can use the mouse to drag the right column edge to the left or right, it’s tedious to get the column width (or row height) exactly right. Luckily, the Excel AutoFit feature makes it easy.
Simply hover over the right column edge and double-click (see below). That will adjust the column width to accommodate the widest cell, but no more. You can the same thing with row heights.
AutoFit Column Width (or Row Height): Double-click on right/bottom border of column/row
You can use this double-click trick on multiple columns or rows at once to resize them simultaneously.
For simplicity’s sake, I’ll just focus on columns (not rows) in the next few paragraphs. But similar methods can be employed with rows as well.
If you want multiple columns to have the exact same width, select them all, then drag the right border of the entire selection until it’s the right size, then let go. If that’s too tedious, you can also right click, then choose Column Width… and enter the exact width. Everything you selected will now have that column width.
Can I copy and paste an Excel column width?
Yes you can, baby. If you want to copy a column width from one column to another, there’s a hybrid shortcut. This shortcut is faster than figuring out the column width of the first column, then adjusting second column width manually. The shortcut uses the ‘Column Widths’ option on the Paste Special pop-up menu:
You only need to copy one cell and only need to paste its column width into one cell (you don’t need to select the entire columns, though that maybe better for you visually). You can also copy from and paste the column widths into multiple columns at once (see the animation above).
Copy And Paste Column Widths (hybrid): Copy cell that has desired column width, then select cell in target column, then RC-S-S-W-Enter (or RC-S-S-W-<OK>).
AutoFit and pasting column widths can be a life saver when trying to fly through a spreadsheet under pressure. Enjoy!
